School was not a priority; he bounced from one middle school to another due to behavioral issues that led to suspensions. “Learning wasn’t at the top of my list,” he says. “My future was looking cloudy.”

But a turning point came when Hector and his mother watched a news segment on Channel 12 about the opening of a new school—the Eagle Academy for Young Men of the Bronx. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a significant event, attended by notable figures including then-Governor David Paterson. “I remember thinking, ‘An all-boys school? Who would want to go there?'” Hector laughs. Little did he know, his mother had already made up her mind. “She told me that’s where I would be going to high school,” he says. And so began the journey that would change his life.

Embracing the Eagle Way

In the summer of 2012, Hector enrolled at Eagle Academy and participated in the Summer Bridge program—an immersive introduction that brings new students into the school’s culture during July and August. “I realized that I started to come out of my comfort zone within the first two weeks,” he reflects. The program was pivotal in shifting his mindset, allowing him to appreciate what Eagle Academy could offer.

One of the most impactful aspects was the visible culture of success displayed throughout the building. The walls were adorned with images of influential historical figures, framed photos of past graduates, and inspiring artwork. “Seeing everyone in uniform, you felt like you belonged,” Hector notes. “At my past schools, everyone was different, had different clothing, was in competition, and I felt discouraged to go to school. But at Eagle, there was a sense of unity.”

Seeking additional rigor and opportunities, Hector transferred to Fordham University to study Economics. He graduated in 2020 and soon began his role as a Rotational Wealth Management Global Training Program Analyst at UBS. In this position, he leverages his talents across various teams, including research, equity trading, and working with options and financial advisors. “I have learned so much and met so many people,” he shares. “And I am only a year and nine months out of college.”

While Hector is thriving in the financial sector, his true passion lies in helping others.
